The Lady Dragon's Story
A story inspired by the song 'LadyDragon' by Dreamtale
Dreamtale – Lady Dragon
The mighty dragon in her lair
There is no daylight and no air
There's pleasure, a treasure
There lies an endless nightmare
Go inside if you dare
Many heroes tried and failed
The lonely dragon in her lair
She's got gold but she doesn't care
She's waiting, for someone
To hold and not to run
She wants love, she wants passion
Many years she tried and failed
Now the years are passing by
Lady Dragon doesn't fly
She lies in her keep
Tryin' to sleep
Forever she dreams a river full of tears and sorrow
Longing for neverending love
The mighty dragon in her lair
She met a king with golden hair
He wanted the treasure
She wanted love and pleasure
He tried to cut her wing
Just one breath did kill the king
Still the years are passing by
Lady Dragon doesn't fly
Almost lost her wing
By the evil king
Forever she cries a river full of tears and sorrow
Longing for neverending love
"Mrs. Monaghan, how nice to have you here this evening!"
"Thank you, Fynn, I am very happy to be here as well."
"Mrs. Monaghan, you're very well known for your research of Irish history, but not until a month ago did we know you were such an amazing story-teller. Your first non-scientific book, a collection of old Irish stories combined with original elements gripped the people out there.
People are becoming more and more interested in old Irish myths and magic has become a synonim with your name. Tell us, how did you do it?"
"Truth be told, I am very fortunate to have such a rich family history, which inspired many stories in the book. Of course my work in research has helped me too, but I really wanted to bring back the magic of the old days. I want people to believe in magic again, just as I started shortly after I met my husband."
"Mrs. Monaghan, may I call you Maureen – "
"Of course you can Fynn."
"Thank you Maureen. Thank you also for anticipating the next, and main, subject: magic.
Most of the people who read your book were fascinated by a particular story, 'A Dragon'sLove',
saying it inspired them to believe in love and magic. Your readers would like to know more about this tale, as it is your most personal one, and, as you said, there's a bit more to its background story."
"Yes, this really is the most personal story and it's deeply rooted in my familiy's history, and this evening, you, Fynn, and everybody watching this show will hear the full story, with all the background details, of 'A Dragon's Love'."
"Thank you so much for wanting to share this with us, Maureen. Ladies and gentleman, let's hear the most magical tale that has ever been told"
"Once, in times of old, when there was magic every where and people still believed in it, a mighty race of magical creatures reigned, the Dragons. They were powerful beings, able to assume a human form, thus it was easier for them to interact with the humans, helping the many noble-hearted knights, kings and queens, to maintain peace.
The most powerful of the Dragons was a young witch called Morrighan Amanranth, skilled not only with magic and weapons, but also, despite her age, skilled with words. She had inherited not only her mother's wisdom, but also her kind heart and beauty.
The story begins with Morrighan falling in love with a noble prince, named Aengus Monaghan, whose father helped the Dragons maintain the peace during many years of battle. Fortunately, Morrighan met the young prince in times of peace, the battles were long forgotten and love had a chance to blossom.
And how it blossomed! Each and every day Morrighan and Aengus were to be seen together, walking through the nearby forest or in the magnificent garden of Aengus's father's castle. They were always deep in conversation, talking about serious things and not so serious things, a smile upon both their faces, every time their eyes met.
Their love grew stronger over the years, empowering both of them: Morrighan became even more skilled in her craft and Aengus replaced his father as the best swordsman of the kingdom.
But with the passing of the years, the world around began to change, dark days were approaching, those dark days the Dragons had foreseen, but hoped would not come to be.
Many humans became violent, either fearing magic or using it for evil purposes, hunting down magical creatures like dragons and fairies, throwing the world into chaos.
The Dragons protected their magic and heritage as good as possible, but many of them were slaughtered. And the humans not only hunted down the magical creatures, but also began to fight among each other, craving treasures and power that did not belong to them.
Morrighan and Aengus fought together, protecting their families and their homeland. But despite their efforts, the never-ending war claimed many victims: Morrighan's parents and Aengus' father as well as many more of their friends.
Morrighan and Aengus were the only ones left in their kingdom, guarding the treasure Aengus' father had left them and the wisdom and knowledge of Morrighan's family. But the battles were not over. One night their home was invaded by the followers of the king that ruled the nearby kingdom. That king was very proud and also very violent, he had already killed many other kings and many Dragons, envious of their powers, knowledge and treasures.
There were just too many enemies for Morrighan and Aengus to handle, they stole almost everything that Aengus had been left by his father. The only part of the treasure that was left was his mother's necklace, that he gave to Morrighan, as a sign of his love, and she swore to treasure it for ever.
So many were the enemies that in a last attempt to protect everything dear to him, Aengus was mortally wounded and Morrighan, who could not save him, unleashed her full powers upon the enemies and drove them away. But there was no hope left for Aengus, for no matter how great her powers were, Morrighan could not cheat death. The only thing she could do was to ensure that Aengus would be reborn, in a more peaceful time, and Morrighan promised she would wait for him, sealing his memories in the necklace he gave to her.
And so Morrighan assumed her dragon form and withdrew to a lonely cave, far away in the mountains, to guard the treasure Aengus had left her: his memories and his love, sealed by Morrighan's magic in his mother's necklace.
Many years passed, bringing change to the world, but not the change Morrighan hoped for. Though she stayed in her cave most of the time, she occasionally got out too see what had become of the world, always returning with more grief inside her than the last time. The world had become an even darker place, the humans were greedier and more violent than ever before and almost all magic was drained from it. Very few magical creatures existed, and they were hiding, because the humans feared magic, they had forgotten how much the magic had helped their ancestors and how much there was to learn from it.
From time to time stories reached her about fine young knights or some wise king that seemed not to have forgotten about chivalry and kindness. And so Morrighan had started to hope again when she heard of a young king who had been told a legend about a magical dragon in a cave who would reward those worthy of finding it.
Morrighan heard many good things about this man and she hoped he might be the reincarnation of her love, Aengus.
But, oh, how great was her dissapointment when it turned out that he only came to find the cave because he heard that the dragon was guarding a great treasure and he hoped to be the one to lay his hands on it.
Morrighan also learned that what he knew about magic were not the good things, for he believed her to be a vicious beast who just wouldn't let him have the treasure. He attacked Morrighan the moment he saw her, and she was so shocked that he almost cut off one of her wings. Seeing this, Morrighan did not hesitate one second and, with a mighty breath of fire, the king was killed.
The king left a wound upon Morrighan, but it wasn't the small cut on her wing that had made her change so much, but the wound he left in her heart, for she wanted to believe in him, she wanted to believe in humans again, but that was not possible anymore. As hopeful as she was before meeting the young king, as hopeless and sad she became afterwards.
The following years passed even more quiet, for Morrighan left her cave rarely, looking at, and walking through the world over the passing years like a shadow, all hope gone that the world might become a better place, that the humans would become wiser and learn from their mistakes. And after every visit she looked at the necklace Aengus gave her, silently sighing and wondering if she was ever going to see him again, if there was a chance she could find him in this new and cruel world.
Even the modern era did not stir her curiosity and interest too much. She just shook her head at the foolish belief of the humans that technology could replace magic, that just because they found a way of living without magic, they wouldn't need spirituality and could forget and not honour the wisdom of their ancestors anymore.
Though she admired one thing or the other in this new world, they did not stir her interest too much and she still had no hope of finding her love, for it seemed that in this modern world love was something the humans had long forgotten.
Just as she considered to retreat to her cave for another long period of time, she saw a young man outside her cave, lost in thoughts as though he has waiting for someone. Morrighan observed him from the distance at first, before she approached him. From afar he didn't seem to be any different than the other humans she saw, but just as she was near enough to see his face, his eyes startled her. Though he appeared to be pretty young, she saw the wisdom, love and suffering of many years in his eyes, those eyes were exactly like Aengus', it was like Aengus' soul was visible through this young man's eyes. But everything else was different about him, the rest of his face, his stature, his hair.
'Hello, I'm Alan', he said, 'who are you?'
His voice surprised her somehow, it was very much like Aengus' voice, and yet slightly different.
'Hello, my name is Maureen' , she considered adapting her name to a more modern one, as Morrrighan was a name that went out of use some time ago; ' nice to meet you, Alan.'
'Nice to meet you too, Maureen. I often come here, but I haven't seen you around here before, how come?'
'Because I just moved here. But I was born here and then moved away, so the city nearby is not that new to me.'
'How nice. If you need help with moving, feel free to ask, or if there are other things I can help you with, don't hesitate to ask.'
'Thank you very much, I'll definitely get back to you to show me one thing or the other that changed since I've last been here.'
They kept on talking for some time and Morrighan decided to give the present a chance, start a new life and to get to know Alan better. This meant that she had a few things to settle, so with the promise to see Alan again in a few days, they said goodbye and Morrighan started to plan her new life. With all her wisdom and cleverness it wasn't that hard for her to get everything she needed settled. She also bought a house at the outskirts of the city and decided that her with all knowledge she would do best as a historian.
And so her life in the modern era began: she worked at a university, researching Irish mythology. Everyday she discovered one thing or the other about this new time, usually with Alan around and she also made a few friends at the university.
Morrighan had become Maureen, as she called herself from then on, but of course she would always be Morrighan, the most powerful dragon of all times. Though she was determined to get to know Alan without comparing him to Aengus, it was a bit more difficult than Maureen had anticipated. Although he was very different from Aengus, he had many qualities that Maureen valued in Aengus and she really liked him, as Alan, not because he reminded her of Aengus.
But still there were moments when he looked at her, with those eyes that resembled Aengus' eyes so well, and those were the moments when her heart longed for the old days and she even wondered if he really was Aengus' reincarnation. But her powers never failed her…that was Aengus' soul and all his love looking back at her, she must be patient with Alan and wait until he was ready to acknowledge who he was in his past life.
And so Maureen and Alan became close friends, learning from each other, empowering each other and sharing many things toghether.
Though she still retreated from time to time to her cave, Maureen now lived in this modern world and everyday she liked it more; probably because she had Alan, who, even if he didn't really believe in magic had something magical about him and Maureen was sure she could rekindle that magic spark in him.
Of course there were still many things Maureen didn't like about the modern world and she usually went to her cave to meditate and reflect upon the many aspects of her new life, like the almost complete absence of magic or the way spirituality had evolved. Though she was somehow used to this, it still made her sad to see how much the humans actually have lost over the years, many of them just refusing to believe anything that seemed even a little out of the ordinary or how quickly they were ignoring or judging things.
Technology and science fascinated her, she always admired humans for their cleverness and ingenuity, no matter how much they had lost over the years, they always found new ways to replace what had been lost or to upgrade what had become outdated…everything, except spirituality. Too few were the people who were still spiritual in the true meaning of it, some of them found ways to adapt their spirituality with the the new beliefs that came, while others stayed true to the old paths, that survived through time.
Gradually Maureen's need to retreat to her cave diminished, she didn't think that much about Aengus or the past, but focused instead on the present.
And so she fell in love with Alan and Alan fell in love with her too. The past was a memory, a memory she still dwelled upon from time to time, but Alan was her life now, and the friends she made were so happy to hear that they were together and that they both loved each other, more and more each day. Maureen was happier than she had ever been, even when she was happiest with Aengus, a long time ago. And Alan was spiritual too, though he didn't really choose a clear path, he was more spiritual than Maureen anticipated, he was only a little sceptic that something like magic could exist(he was, after all, anchored in the modern era).
But the past wanted to make itself heard, to not be forgotten: Alan started having weird dreams, at first just once or twice a week and then almost every night. Those dreams were very vivid and intense, not nightmares, but they still woke him up in the night and he dwelled on them for the rest of that day.
Maureen knew of those dreams even before Alan told her about them, for she knew exactly that they weren't ordinary dreams but memories of his past life, when he was called Aengus and in love with the dragon Morrighan. And so Maureen knew that time was near for Alan to know about his past life and about her true self, the only secret she hadn't shared with him…yet.
And then one evening Alan told Maureen all about his dreams, asking her if she might know what they could mean. Maureen had, of course, an answer ready, yet she was surprised that when she started talking about past lifes and reincarnation Alan seemed less sceptic than usual.
'All those dreams I've had in the past weeks, they seem to real to be dreams, like I'd lived them, they seem like a memory of past I'd long forgotten…and I see a woman who looks so much like you, telling me to remember her. And then I feel such a deep connection with you, like I've always known you…always loved you. You changed my world, significantly, and I really have the feeling there is magic in the air, to use your words. But I still don't understand what those dreams mean and I'm sure there's more to them.'
'Everything you assumed is true, you have lived before, more than thousand years ago, your name was Aengus Monaghan and you loved me. My name was, still is, Morrighan Amaranth, and I loved you for more than thousand years and I've waited for you to be reborn, waited many hundred years to tell you all this and to give you back the pendant you gave me as a sign of your love and our commitment.'
As Alan touched the pendant images flowed through his mind and all the memories of his past life came back to him, every moment he shared with Maureen, sad or happy, all was his again.
And then Maureen did something she hadn't done for a long time, she assumed her dragon form.
And she stood there, beautiful and mighty, a blue-green and purple dragon, in the living room of the house they bought together, looking at him with the same loving eyes she had in her human form.
'Now, the past and the present have truly become one, ' she said, 'and we are ready to build a future, my love. I'm so sorry I kept this from you, but I couldn't tell you until the time was right, forgive me.'
'There is nothing to be forgiven, you acted as wisely as I would have expected of you. And I was too sceptic too believe all this at first, anyway. Let's just start building our future and celebrate that we have finally and truly found each other again.', and as she changed back into a human, they began to kiss.
And that is the full story of the dragon once known as Morrighan Amaranth.
"Mrs. Monaghan, sorry, I mean Maureen, that is truly one of the most fascinating stories I've ever heard, and certainly pretty difficult to comprehend."
"As I sad in my story, to few people nowadays believe in magic anymore, but it is up to you how much of it you believe, I just told you and everybody out there my story, hoping to rekindle a bit of the old magic."
"There certainly seems to be something like magic in the air this evening, Maureen, you have charmed us all beyond our imagination. I just have one last question: are there any more dragons out there, or are you the last?"
"Interesting of you to ask that, Fynn, because until recently I was the last dragon, but not anymore, " and she moved her fingers carefully over her stomach. The future had already begun.
